Health Benefits
|
According to scientific research, the average vegetarian (male or female) has a Body Mass Index that is 2% lower than that of the general population and has a life span that exceeds the US average by 3 years. As you can see below, there are many reasons why vegetarians are so healthy.
Vitamins and Nutrients - Fruits, vegetables, nuts and beans are much higher in absorbable vitamins and minerals relative to their caloric content than animal-based foods. Make sure you are getting your protein and iron by eating plenty of nuts and beans. Calcium is found in dark green leafy vegetables.
Less Saturated Fat and Cholesterol - Cholesterol is found only in animal foods. It is one of the leading causes of heart disease, which is the leading killer of Americans. Saturated fat is another harmful fat that is found mainly in animal products, like red meat and butter. It is responsible for arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis, diseases that often lead to strokes. Another benefit: vegetable fats are mostly monounsaturated, which means that they actually improve cholesterol levels.
